Well, I wandered around a bit, last three days and I must say that it was enough for me :) It's nice to wander, but you can't only do that in life. As a result, I'm not not even comply with my own blogging deadlines, what I will immediately try to rectify with this great and timeless album ...
So, turn up the amplifier, do not worry about the neighbors, Christmas time is gone, it is a time to again socialize with our loyal friend, Mr. Faust :)
John Lurie, a strange guy, we could say, and also versatile artist. He dealt throughout his career with music, with acting and painting, always staying on the margins of the popular, yet leaving a strong impression on those who had the antenna to catch his signal.
And as for me, the signal was too strong to miss it. And what about your antenna? Does it work properly? :)
Aesthetically, this album has a very high value. Obvious joy of playing, unencumbered by genres and appealing on first listen, it give a combination that can't fail.
One thing is for sure, if they exist at all, the people who first heard of Lucifer through this album, it will be very confused with stereotypes of the traditional understanding of the world and heaven :)
If you are the average music consumer, you know about them through their eternal summer hit "La Bamba." If it happen that you are interested in a bit more, in front of you is one of the best mainstream rock bands ever.
And what about me? I'm, of course, interested :)
I have to say, my brain only works on half power ..I slept barely four hours, so, i'm little bit lost right now :) And somehow, this detachment from reality makes me very susceptible to this fine and imaginative soundtrack made by my old companion Fred Frith :)
Back at home after nearly twenty days trip, I realized that I rarely listened to music, perhaps for the first time in my life. You know what, this is possible :) And yet, in rare lonely moments, with a fervor, I threw myself on this album, losing myself in it, in the mysterious and not always understandable Callahan's mind, still, feeling very strong affiliation to this strange world ... .
And what about you? Maybe you also belong there? Here's a great opportunity to check it :)
Today's post fostered a classic sound. First reason for that is music itself. Quality of interpretation here is very high. Lucinda is at the very top of the U.S. country pop/rock production, her strong personality raised her high above the average. A second, essentially, i am alternative person. But, a long time ago, I realized one thing. If I, with my alternative thinking reject everything else, i'm then conservative idiot. Not to mention the sacrifice of various pleasures....
And precisely there is the key, in pleasures. Because, Lucinda wild and melancholy world makes me very happy :)
Here's an one unusual rock album that, perhaps, will refuse classic rockers with their psychedelic and experimental elements. What a shame, it could provide them much pleasure :)
So, do not think too much, just turn it out loud :)
Both bands which Jason Pierce had, Spiritualized and Spacemen 3, are described as hypnotic and psychedelic, and it's hard to deny ... as well as their quality, after all. However, what's attracted me the most, was their, somewhat in the background, rock talent.
And like a proof of my submission is this great rock record :)
Is ten minutes a lot or a little? Well, it depends. Listen to this brilliant and little bit nervous EP five times in a row, you will most probably think that fifty minutes is a very very short period of time :)
Tme is relative. They say...
Robert Plant, regardless of the demands of the time, the market and the development of production, during his long career managed something very difficult. The result of his work has always been authentic, andat the same timehe respectedall of the aboverequirements ....
Such an attitude toward work, at least for me, deserves a lot of respect in the first place, because those who have managed to achieve his whole career without any qualitative downs, there are very few. Most of losing at least a decade, failing to cope with the demands of time ... The only person I can think of, who did it successfully, is Martin Scorsese, although he's from the world of movies ...
After all, keeping in mind that Plant is sixty years old, just listen to how this album sounds. Modern, very adventurous and very strong :)
Joe Burns and John Convertinoexplores the possibilitiesof soundfor nearlythirtyyears, and, i believe, they visitedall of itsfields. Also, it can be said that the quality of their work is no longer questionable...
So, the only thing we can discuss here is the relationship between the audience and their music. And if we explore relationship between this album and its consumers, and if we measure how many times a person can say, "Well, this is great" every time after listen to it, the average score so far is infinite :) Now, you can say that i'm speaking nonsense, nothing is so good, but your argument in the present is totally negligible. So, contact me for a twenty years approximately :)
The question is should we even theorize about this strong, repetitive and riff oriented album of British band "Loop". Its purpose is very primitive and extremely simple, you just need to unscrew it very loud :)
There is a saying " Still waters run deep." Now, what does it matter? There is nothing still in this album, nor has to do with water .. So, what i wanted to emphasize with this counter example is (at least in this case) needlessness of any allusion. I only wanted to say that raw power is, by definition, incontinent and that is "A Gilded Eternity", just a nice example of a factual situation :)
P.S.
This is the original version of the album, which is available only on vinyl and don't contain bonus tracks, the one I prefer :)
I suppose, this album owes its sound to psychedelic sound of late '60's and early '70's. But, that doesn't say that record is outdated, just the opposite, it's timeless. They dig in our past just to spoke to us in our present. Their thoughts are sharp, sometimes satiric and playing is always inspiring and imaginative. Also, this record very varied in genres, that's why it's not so easy catch. But, try to imagine everything good in popular music, probably you'll find it here. In other words, those who think great, well, they can't go backwards :)
The fact that this album is result of third meeting of these guys say a lot to us. Vernon Reid, Jamaaladeen Tacuma and Calvin Weston can play anything they want, at any time. Also, maybe they work fast, but result is very complex set of songs and nothing less than excellent.
But what is really important here, this is record of a free spirit. When you let this record loud, both body and mind are satisfied. And after all, that is all that counts :)
This is one dirty jazzfunkrock record. All that in one? Well, that's what Ulmer's initial idea was and it is wonderfully realized. If you add to that Ulmer's highly original guitar playing, satisfaction is guaranteed :)
The Make-Up is one great rock'n'roll band by all criteria. This LP could stand proudly at any time of rock history. All songs here are classic, performance is raw and wild, arrangements are most detailed and result is nothing less than explosion.
So, besides the obvious quality, why this post? Well, in these "rock is dead" days, anachronistic idea is always welcome. If you ask me, of course :)
Once, when i discovered this LP, it was brand new experience for me. I really enjoyed in Annette's exciting world, and after all, i still do. Not just enjoyed, i was sucked in. Annette ate me for breakfast, i might say. :)
And what kind of music is this, you ask? Sometimes is rock, sometimes is jazz, sometimes is wild, sometimes beautiful. And in the same time it is above all i said. Because, like every other great artwork, it dismiss genres completely, rising above it.
In the end, good music speaks for itself, all you have todo is to open your ears :)
I remember, ten years ago, i was in record store, looking forgood music. And then, among otherCD's, i saw cover picture, some guy called Mark Lanegan. Picture was red & black and he had drawn devil horns. So, I bough it and went home. And from the first song i was fascinated, what a crazy rock songs, man. It was hard rock, yes, but in the same time it was something much higher, wild and free music. That year, i played this record a lot, slowly revealing spices that gave her such good taste.
And two years after, i find out very funny thing. One of mine favorite records is not even Mark Lanegan record. This CD was side project from some other guy, Josh Homme, and he is the leader of "Queens of the Stone Age" and Lanegan, he is just a guest. Even cover wasn't same... The thing is, in that time there was no original CD's in my country, just pirate copies, maybe somebody couldn't find original cover picture, so, devilish Lanegan finished there to tickles my imagination :)
So, that's how one strange coincidence opened the door to an entirely new world, a door behind which you can find Mark Lanegan, Queens of The Stone Age, Desert Sessions, Eagles of Death Metal, Mondo Generator... Not bad at all :)
