Nine Rain - Nine Rain

This collaboration, between one of the founders of the famous San Francisco avant-garde group Tuxedomoon, Steven Brown, and his Mexican friends has produced a very interesting result. Although, perhaps not perfect, this somewhat raw mix of rhythms, with melancholic saxophone and occasional bursts of unbridled energy, above all reminds me of Mexico because it's wide palette. If we look, e.g. pictures of Frida Khalo or a plate of Mexican food we will see one thing: an assembly of bright colors and intense flavors, all in one place. We have the same situation here. Naked City - Naked City

For Zorn admirers this is an inevitable part of a large and varied career, but for those who don't know who Zorn is, it will be an excursion into something that they could not even imagine :) This powerful blend of rock, jazz, metal and noise, linked with violent strikes of Zorn's saxophone, as well with fantastic assembled team of New York musicians (Fred Frith, Bill Frisell, Wayne Horvitz, Yamatsuka Eye), makes that music here resists all borders and genre limitations and give to us something completely unique.
Just the way I like :)

Laurie Anderson - Mister Heartbreak

Although the words are her favorite toy, Ms. Anderson also successfully handle with music and with visual art .. Basically performer and multimedia artist, during its long career, she published several very interesting albums. One of them, maybe little bit more accessible, is precisely this album. Sonically weird, with strange verses, and supported with more than great guests, it represent adventure that does not make sense to miss :)

If by any chance, aesthetics was the most important criterion of this blog, I doubt that this album would have ended up here. If criteria is humor, it would have some chance .... And since the only criterion is the quality of the music, then I think there is no problems :)

Don Cherry - Eternal Rhythm

 

Although not very oriented towards jazz, some of my favorite records belong, tentatively said, to this direction. How, you ask? The answer lies in the authors themselves, the individual musicians who understand music as something without a limitations. And Don Cherry, he is certainly one of them :)

Chris Connelly - The Episodes

Some day, while I listened to this album, my mother began to talk about some TV show about Bowie ... And to my comment that it isn't he, let's say that I haven't managed to convince her :) Now, although the way of singing resembles the early phase of above-mentioned, i found it difficult to accept this kind of comparison with a little bit, at least for me, boring Ziggy Stardust, and it is even quite inappropriate to powerful and complex vision like this.
Anyway, try to listen Bowie's albums after 1974, and while accepting that they exists at all, maybe you can fill your time with this excellent album :)

Fred Frith - Allies

I have to say, my brain only works on half power ..I slept barely four hours, so, i'm little bit lost right now :) And somehow, this detachment from reality makes me very susceptible to this fine and imaginative soundtrack made by my old companion Fred Frith :)

Jim O'Rourke - Eureka

I'm not so sure about this album's reputation today, somehow i lost connection with people with whom i listened this, nor have I run into it outside of my world a long time........but, i'm sitting here, day was fast, i'm pretty tired and last song is just finished. And you know what? Even through today's fog, it's status is very clear to me...
Beyond all categories and very seductive   :)

Spring has arrived bringing with itself a host of impressions, new energy and a torrent of life ... Should we add something to all this? There is no need ...
But still, if the rain falls at least a half hour, or you are forced to spend that time in an enclosed space, you have enough time to listen to this great album, and at the same time, without disturbing rhythm of spring, you can continue collecting of impressions  :P

Holger Czukay - On the Way to the Peak of Normal

Two days ago was my birthday, so, all in all, it wasn't bad day :) Now, the concept of birthdays is inevitably tied to the end of one and for the start of a new life cycle. And somehow our civilized way of thinking imposed to us this new beginning, to try to rein us, to become better, and that "better" is in close connection with our alignment with standards that we are currently offering. Now, how is that consistent with ourselves, the question is ...
Therefore, taking into account the above, I found a suitable choice for today's post with its Holy Grail title "On the Way to the Peak of Normal". With title, as something that is required of us, and with the music, which with its peculiarities says : " Yes, yes, maybe next year ".   :P

Alice Coltrane - Journey in Satchidananda

Alice Coltrane is giant. Why? Well, try to imagine an overall sound that represents life in its essencee. Life like journey. Not an easy task. We humans are too small, our mind will always have barrier. And what about Alice? She just entered the studio and recorded this powerful pieces, i believe, without much thinking.

Pauline Oliveros - Accordion and Voice

Pauline Oliveros is extraordinary accordion player, but she doesn't respect traditional sound at all. No wonder, she's name is closely related with innovation in the fields of electronic music, improvisation, and meditative sound. Annette Peacock - X-Dreams

Once, when i discovered this LP, it was brand new experience for me. I really enjoyed in Annette's exciting world, and after all, i still do. Not just enjoyed, i was sucked in. Annette ate me for breakfast, i might say. :)
And what kind of music is this, you ask? Sometimes is rock, sometimes is jazz, sometimes is wild, sometimes beautiful. And in the same time it is above all i said. Because, like every other great artwork, it dismiss genres completely, rising above it.
In the end, good music speaks for itself, all you have to do is to open your ears :)

John Zorn - The Big Gundown: John Zorn Plays the Music of Ennio Morricone (15th Anniversary Edition)

I always tought about Zorn like one of the greatest. And Morricone? Well, with his significant sound, he is deeply in world's subconscious by now. I watched “Once upon a time in the West” few days ago, that is perfect movie. Leone and Morricone made peace of art, raw model for present art. You can say: "It is classic", but once upon a time it was the universe with its own rules. Just like today's post. Morricone for 21st Century.
