Nine Rain - Nine Rain

This collaboration, between one of the founders of the famous San Francisco avant-garde group Tuxedomoon, Steven Brown, and his Mexican friends has produced a very interesting result. Although, perhaps not perfect, this somewhat raw mix of rhythms, with melancholic saxophone and occasional bursts of unbridled energy, above all reminds me of Mexico because it's wide palette. If we look, e.g. pictures of Frida Khalo or a plate of Mexican food we will see one thing: an assembly of bright colors and intense flavors, all in one place. We have the same situation here. Naked City - Naked City

For Zorn admirers this is an inevitable part of a large and varied career, but for those who don't know who Zorn is, it will be an excursion into something that they could not even imagine :) This powerful blend of rock, jazz, metal and noise, linked with violent strikes of Zorn's saxophone, as well with fantastic assembled team of New York musicians (Fred Frith, Bill Frisell, Wayne Horvitz, Yamatsuka Eye), makes that music here resists all borders and genre limitations and give to us something completely unique.
Just the way I like :)

New Wet Kojak - Nasty International

If we ask what kind of music is this, I'm not sure we'll come up with some concrete results. Created as an extension of Girls Against Boys, this Washington-based group may be a rock, but it's also the noise, ambiental, or some kind of sonic passage that feels good to my ears. All in all, a thick and murky sound, based more on tension than on the riff.
After all, this is all just theorizing, what is important that I spent an hour in vacuuming and wiping the dust, enjoying, all thanks to this great album :)

Laurie Anderson - Mister Heartbreak

Although the words are her favorite toy, Ms. Anderson also successfully handle with music and with visual art .. Basically performer and multimedia artist, during its long career, she published several very interesting albums. One of them, maybe little bit more accessible, is precisely this album. Sonically weird, with strange verses, and supported with more than great guests, it represent adventure that does not make sense to miss :)

French Frith Kaiser Thompson - Live, Love, Larf & Loaf

This band, in addition to the inevitable "all-star" epithet, also echoes with the sound of four friends which have very much fun. Taking into account the strong aura of each individual separately here, and apparently non-existent clash of egos, the result is a charming, colorful and always great record.

If by any chance, aesthetics was the most important criterion of this blog, I doubt that this album would have ended up here. If criteria is humor, it would have some chance .... And since the only criterion is the quality of the music, then I think there is no problems :)

Jarboe - Mahakali

If we take for truth the idea that people listen to the kind of music how they feel at that moment, the question is how  I feel  listening to this album? Certainly not a very calm :) Although, it's also true, that, after this i will listen, for example, Parliament, gently wiggling hips ... Now, that says more about my personality, stable in perpetual variations ... and this is precisely what can be said for Mahakali :)

Chris Connelly - The Episodes

Some day, while I listened to this album, my mother began to talk about some TV show about Bowie ... And to my comment that it isn't he, let's say that I haven't managed to convince her :) Now, although the way of singing resembles the early phase of above-mentioned, i found it difficult to accept this kind of comparison with a little bit, at least for me, boring Ziggy Stardust, and it is even quite inappropriate to powerful and complex vision like this.
Anyway, try to listen Bowie's albums after 1974, and while accepting that they exists at all, maybe you can fill your time with this excellent album :)

Yoko Ono Plastic Ono Band - Between My Head and the Sky

Typical album by Yoko Ono means atypical album for majority. Some people say that is very difficult to survive her records, and yet, for me, it seem somehow very attractive :) A long time ago, i found somewhere, otherwise excellent record "Double Fantasy," by Lennon and Yoko, and her songs are fascinated me, in a way I was deeply emotionally touched. Neither this album is no exception, very colorful in sound, when near the end sail into calmer waters, I do not know whether I want to return to the port :)

Bill Callahan - Apocalypse

Back at home after nearly twenty days trip, I realized that I rarely listened to music, perhaps for the first time in my life. You know what, this is possible :) And yet, in rare lonely moments, with a fervor, I threw myself on this album, losing myself in it, in the mysterious and not always understandable Callahan's mind, still, feeling very strong affiliation to this strange world ... .

Tomahawk - Anonymous

Patton's legacy is huge by now, almost can't remember the genre that didn't touched. Although, by itself, this doesn't mean anything, what means is a fact that there is no decline in quality. Patton's muse is endless and it's hard to even imagine where it will lead. Perhaps, you might say jokingly, he will try to play, for example, Indian folklore. Or something crazy like that.

The Creatures - Boomerang

This kind of music always interested me, one that knows no boundaries, also very strange and rhythmic completely open. Indeed, according to the thin line between alternative and pop music and assuming that we want to do something like this, it would be very difficult to define the genre of this album :)
And above all, as the connective tissue, here is Siouxie, giving us himself, and that element is absolutely irreplaceable, if you please :)

Richard Horowitz & Sussan Deyhim - Majoun

Characteristics of oriental sound, and thing that causes my respect for it, is that strong element of psychedelia. After all, the early encounters of alternative music in early seventies, and before that jazz, with oriental music, spread their musical horizons over the limit and that was not accidental. Oriental sound was shining with a splendor of timeless, as well as landscapes from which she came. And timelessness in art is an imperative ...
And today's post, although production is very modern and orchestration is a classic, undoubtedly belong to the Mr. Orient.

Jim O'Rourke - Eureka

I'm not so sure about this album's reputation today, somehow i lost connection with people with whom i listened this, nor have I run into it outside of my world a long time........but, i'm sitting here, day was fast, i'm pretty tired and last song is just finished. And you know what? Even through today's fog, it's status is very clear to me...

Loop - A Gilded Eternity

The question is should we even theorize about this strong, repetitive and riff oriented album of British band "Loop". Its purpose is very primitive and extremely simple, you just need to unscrew it very loud :)
There is a saying " Still waters run deep." Now, what does it matter? There is nothing still in this album, nor has to do with water .. So, what i wanted to emphasize with this counter example is (at least in this case) needlessness of any allusion. I only wanted to say that raw power is, by definition, incontinent and that is "A Gilded Eternity", just a nice example of a factual situation :)

This is the original version of the album, which is available only on vinyl and don't contain bonus tracks, the one I prefer  :)

Bongwater - The Big Sell-Out

 

I suppose, this album owes its sound to psychedelic sound of late '60's and early '70's. But, that doesn't say that record is outdated, just the opposite, it's timeless. They dig in our past just to spoke to us in our present. Their thoughts are sharp, sometimes satiric and playing is always inspiring and imaginative. Also, this record very varied in genres, that's why it's not so easy catch. But, try to imagine everything good in popular music, probably you'll find it here.
In other words, those who think great, well, they can't go backwards :)

Free Form Funky Freqs - Urban Mythology, Vol. 1

The fact that this album is result of third meeting of these guys say a lot to us. Vernon Reid, Jamaaladeen Tacuma and Calvin Weston can play anything they want, at any time. Also, maybe they work fast, but result is very complex set of songs and nothing less than excellent.
But what is really important here, this is record of a free spirit. When you let this record loud, both body and mind are satisfied. And after all, that is all that counts :)
